Girl in the Blue Coat, the Young Adult choice, is historical fiction. It is set in the time of World War II. For the protagonist in this story, it was a time of danger, and quiet rebellion as she sells black market items to those around her. It's dangerous, but it takes care of her family. But, her world is going to get even more dangerous as a customer pulls her into her confidence and asks her to help find a missing Jewish teenager who was hiding in her customer's house. In our culture of refugees and unrest, we may be able to put ourselves into the story of a young person who makes a choice to face the danger and value life. This book could be the beginning of lots of good discussion.
The Iowa Center for the Book established All Iowa Reads in 2003. This was an initiative to get communities across the state to join together to read a chosen book and hold book discussions. Well, for the first time, All Iowa Reads has added a children's book and a Young Adult book to the reading list. For the year 2018, All Iowa Reads has chosen the adult book, The Boys in the Bunkhouse by Dan Barry; the children's book, Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and the YA book, Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse.
