Mechanica by Betsy Cornwell is a steampunk Cinderella with a twist. It has all of the elements of a Cinderella story. The mean stepmother and stepsisters, the prince, the fairy godmother - well maybe not in the way that we are used to. Nicolette grew up in a house that has embraced the fairy world and what fairy can do, but when the Queen is accidentally poisoned by fairy medicine, all things fairy are banned. For Nicolette, this changes her life as first her mother dies and then her father and she is left with a stepmother and two stepsisters.
Will Nicolette ever find the love that she craves from warm family? Will she be able to nurture the gifts that her mother left her? Will she meet her handsome prince and live happily ever after? Such a fun twist on every little girl's dream fairy tale.
One more Cinderella story that I think is really fun is Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I mention this book for those who have been following the fairy tale series, because the final book, Winter, will be coming in November. If you haven't read this series, I highly recommend it for those who enjoy rewritten fairy tales, fantasy, sci-fi, adventure, romance - it fits all of those categories.
