Tell the World: Teen Poems From Writerscorps, is a collection of poems that were written by teens who have participated in a writing group called WritersCorps. This collection gives voice to teen feelings and ideas.
Poetry not only spans the age groups, it also spans the cultures. The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba's Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle is a history book about Cuba's wars for independence throughout the 1800's. It is poetry that tells a story.
The last two books that I will mention come from American Indian culture. Walking on Earth and Touching the Sky: Poetry and Prose by Lakota Youth at Red Cloud Indian School is a collection of poems written by youth. The poems reflect life on an Indian reservation and what it's like to mix the Indian culture with the present-day world. The second book is Dreaming In Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices. This book is so much more than poetry. It is art, photography, hopes, and dreams.
