Rebel Seoul by Axie Oh is not exactly a super hero story. But, just as Iron Man wears an iron suit, one of our characters in Rebel Seoul gets to wear an iron suit. The story is set in East Asia in the late twenty-second century, and as in so many Young Adult futuristic stories, the world is at war. This book follows an eighteen-year-old ex-gang member who ends up recruited into a weapons-development program and is given the job of keeping track of the girl in the iron suit. This is a story of loyalty and beliefs and standing up for what is right.
In a culture of super heroes, it's not surprising that authors would be writing science fiction. Movie goers line up to wait for the next movie to come out. In the same way, readers line up for the next book to come out. So, here is one to watch.

School is one of those things that we all have either been through, are going through, or are going to go through. It comes in a variety of forms, public school, private school, homeschool, online school, but it is school none-the-less. So, what was your most important day from your time in school? What makes it significant? Who made it significant? The Date to Save has quite a story to tell. The Date to Save by Stephanie Kate Strohm presents the story of the wildest day in high school and those who survived. How did it happen that every major event on the school calendar got scheduled for the same day? How will the students survive the chaos that a mistake of this magnitude will create? Whose head will roll for such a scheduling nightmare? This book looks like it could be a very entertaining read as we try to get to the bottom of what happened and survive this enormously busy day. The nominations for Iowa Teen Award and Iowa High School Book Award have been announced and there is something for everyone. There is such a diversity of genres included in this year's list, that if you have a particular favorite style, you will probably find it included. So, here are three of the books that have made it into the nominations.
Scythe by Neal Shusterman has been gaining lots of attention. This book creates a world where there is no war, no hunger, no disease, and no misery. It sounds like a perfect world. But, even in a perfect world, there is death, not by natural causes, but at the hands of the scythe. The scythe are the only ones who can end a life and it is their duty, otherwise the population will grow out of control. So, who is chosen to act as scythe? Is it an honor, or something to dread? How are the ones that are to be gleaned chosen? What makes one life more valuable than another? These are questions that the book Scythe may answer. For the reader who loves a good mystery, you might try Need by Joelle Charbonneau. Everyone is checking out a new social media sight that grants needs. It asks just one question, 'What do you need?' So, when Kaylee asks for a new kidney for her brother, she has no idea what she is getting herself into. The site grants needs, but it also makes demands in exchange. Kaylee sets out to find out who is behind the site before the consequences of expressing a need destroys anyone else. Finally, from one of my favorite authors, Heartless by Marissa Meyer. Set in Wonderland, this is a story of kings and queens, mothers wanting their daughters to be queens, daughters wanting to follow their heart, and magic. As with every good fairy tale, there are balls and proposals, and lots of surprises. I think the reader will enjoy the hints at the original Wonderland as they read Heartless. YA reader's love series, and here is one that has captured the attention of lots of readers. The series has been around since 2011 and has just recently added book number seven. The series is Michael Vey by Richard Paul Evans.
Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 kicked off the series in 2011. This is the story of Michael. He is fourteen when our story opens. He's dealing with ninth grade drama. He's also dealing with Tourette's syndrome. But, even bigger, he's dealing with special powers and he is beginning to find out that he is not alone. But, as always happens with special powers, there are people who want to control those with powers. Jump ahead to book seven, Michael Vey: The Final Spark. Michael is the leader of the resistance, and he is in hiding. The bad guys are working to have total control of the world's governments, and the Electroclan is fighting for what is right. Each one in the Electroclan somehow manipulates electricity and Michael is the most powerful of the group. This series is full of adventure and thrills. |
