I always get excited when an author that I really enjoy comes out with a new series. That's how I felt about the book Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh. Renee Ahdieh wrote the series that started with The Wrath and the Dawn. As I read that series, I couldn't wait for the next book because I loved the characters and the strength that they portrayed. So, I read with anticipation, Flame in the Mist. The author offers the reader another multicultural adventure. The honor of the Samurai is demonstrated and challenged. The place of women in the culture is examined. The role of arranged marriages is questioned and honored. There is so much in this book, and I anticipate an exciting continuation when book two shows up on library shelves.

Our teens had some fun last week when we headed out to the local park and learned some survival skills from our local naturalist. She took us into the woods and had us building shelters and learning how to read a compass. After we talked about the compass, she led us further into the woods and left us to find our own way back. There really wasn't much chance that we were going to get lost, but I thought that I would see the way back on the top of the first hill I climbed; and I didn't. So, today I'm highlighting a new book on our shelves that teaches survival skills. How to Start a Fire with Water by David Arama. Looking back on the experience, maybe I should have read the book before I went. The fire that we struggled to start did not get hot enough to roast our marshmallows. So, maybe we failed that part of the training. Anyway, this book offers information not only for wilderness survival, but also home, work, travel, and disaster training. So, whatever the situation, you can find lots of good advice in this book. YA fiction sometimes seems full of tragedy, emotional stress, and end-of-the-world scenarios. So, it's fun to find a new topic and a lighter read once in a while. That's what I'm expecting from Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum. Tell Me Three Things is the story of a young girl who lost her mother and now she has to move across the country and start fresh with her father's new family. Just when she thought she would never fit in, someone reaches out to her online. The book reminds me of conversations online where the reader is challenged to tell three things that no one knows about them, or answer a list of questions about yourself. It can be amazing what you can learn about someone that you have known forever. This book is about loss, recovery, and friendship. What would you do if you expected to die on your birthday? That's what the protagonist in the book I am currently reading deals with every even year birthday. She has been murdered five times and is desperate to figure out how to end this cycle. But, no one believes her and she is starting to think that those who are dedicated to helping her are somehow involved in her nightmare. This may not be the only nightmare taking place in the mountains as an asteroid is heading toward earth and a secret project known as 'Nemesis' may be behind everything. If you love mystery, murder, and suspense, you might enjoy Nemesis by Brendan Reichs. This is an extremely busy time of year for me as I am gardening at both home and the library; I'm finishing the school year with my kids; and I'm planning Summer Reading for the library. But, even in all of the business, there is always time for a book. So, today I'm only sharing about the one book that I am currently reading.
This is the third book in a series by Rick Yancey. The first book was made into a movie last year, and is titled The Fifth Wave. I have finally gotten around to reading the third book, The Last Star. If you haven't seen the movie, it is an apocalyptic story. The world was invaded long before the first wave hit humanity. The invaders co-inhabited the bodies of humans and waited silently to take over the earth. As I read the third novel, I am unconvinced by the argument that the invaders have come for our own good. The idea that humanity is better off without feelings and empathy is a hard argument for the destruction of an entire race. If you aren't familiar with this series, it is an exciting story as young people are left to save the world. You might also try other books by this same author including The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp. |
