Well, the book I am writing about today was written to help us remember and appreciate those who have given of themselves for what our country believes in. Boots on the Ground: America's War in Vietnam was written by Elizabeth Partridge. The Vietnam War was surrounded by controversy. Protests were rampant and people questioned why we were there. This book follows the story of eight people; six soldiers, one American military nurse, and a Vietnamese refugee. The story is not easy. The history is not easy. The book shares the story.
I had an exciting opportunity this past week as our library intern and myself traveled to Washington DC for three days of master classes. It was three days packed full of meetings and filling every extra moment with experiencing the monuments and museums. I wish we had more time to slow down and appreciate the history found in that city. I'm so thankful that, over the years, monuments have been created to cause us to remember and appreciate where our country came from and what we believe in.

I've always enjoyed historical fiction. I enjoy following the life of the characters within the context of real life. I have not read the book I'm talking about yet, but it is definitely on my to-be-read list. Prisoner of War: A Novel of World War II by Michael P. Spradlin is about Henry Forrest as he faces the reality of WWII. He lied about his age to join the Marines and escape what he thought was a difficult life at home. But, when faced with the choice to die or kill, maybe he gets a new perspective on life. Then, his troop surrenders to the Japanese and he becomes a prisoner of war. Now, each day is one more day to survive and stay alive. If you enjoy war stories and historical fiction, maybe you would enjoy Prisoner of War. |
