Speaking of Teen Book Club, we are reading the graphic novel version of The Hound of the Baskervilles. I read this book in novel version several years ago, and now I get to enjoy it in the graphic version. I really enjoy visiting the classics through visual literature. So, if you are ages 13-18 and want to join the discussion, stop in and ask about a copy of the book at the front desk.
We have been busy at the Library designing a week of Sherlock Holmes fun. I am really excited about Sherlock Holmes Week from October 8-13. We have a special guest speaker, Monica Schmidt coming to share, "Will the REAL Sherlock Holmes Please Stand Up." This presentation will delve into the differences and influences of the original literature of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to present day representations in media such as movies. We also have lots of activities for all ages from Family Lego Night to Teen Book Club.

There is a fun new series being written by YA authors. I say authors, because the series has more than one writer. That series introduces the beginnings of some of our favorite superheroes.
The first book I read of this series was Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu. I didn't know what to expect when I picked up the book, but I thought it would be fun to read a new superhero book. Well, I was surprised when it took me back to the beginnings of Batman's crime fighting days. Now, I haven't read every comic book out there, but I had never thought too much about how a superhero became a superhero. This book was a fun introduction to a familiar character. The second book I read was Wonderwoman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo. Again, this book gives us a glimpse into the history of a popular character. It was fun to read about how Wonder Woman's view of life did not necessarily fall in line with her island history. She was meant to be a hero. This book is also on the Teens Top Ten nomination list and teens can vote for their favorite ten between now and October 13th. The newest book in this series is Catwoman: Soulstealer by Sarah J. Maas. I haven't read it yet, but I anticipate that we will get to see a bit of what made Catwoman the character that she is. Who doesn't appreciate a little financial advice. We recently added several books on budgeting, investing, finding jobs, and planning for college. So if you are looking for advice, you might check out some of these books.
Since we're at the start of a new school year, I will mention some of what we have for college students and parents. First is The Community College Advantage by Diane Melville. The book looks at the advantages of community college as it offers a quality education at an affordable cost. This book also talks about the process of transferring to a four year school when you finish at the community college. Another book that offers information about college costs is College Secrets: How to Save Money, Cut College Costs and Graduate Debt Free. This book is written by Lynnette Khalfani Cox. This book takes a thorough look at the cost of attending college. What are the upfront costs? What about hidden costs? How do you get the best financial aid package possible? What student wouldn't like to learn the secrets to graduating debt free? Finally, you might check out Paying for College Without Going Broke by Kalman A. Chany. This book is designed to help you through the financial aid process. It includes worksheets and forms and ideas for how to fill out the forms to make the best use of your resources and finding funds to support your educational goals. |
