I recently started a new series, and I'm hooked. I enjoy a fast paced, adventure, mystery that doesn't require me to think too hard, and this series is fitting the bill.

Well, time has gotten away from me today. Between the internet being down, too many emails, and other distractions, I have only a few minutes to write about books. So, here is a suggestion for the Christmas weekend. There have been times that my children have compared me to the hoarder shows because I have a hard time throwing things away. It's not that I want to hang on to it, it even gets packed into the bags to get rid of. I just struggle with actually getting things out of the house. Don't worry, I am far from actually being a hoarder. So, I've been reading a book about teenagers that have family situations that they are hiding. One girl has a hoarder mother. The other has an alcoholic mom with a live in boyfriend who is showing unwanted attention. Both are trying to cope on their own because they are afraid of what people will think if they knew what was going on. Behind Closed Doors is written by Miriam Halahmy. The saving day may be when these two young people find each other and realize that there is a support system and they don't have to face life alone. So our year is coming near the end. I'm thinking about all of the deadlines and things that I still want to accomplish with only a few weeks left in this year. So, when I started to think about something to write about this week, this series came to mind. Conspiracy 365 by Gabrielle Lord has a book for every month. So, the first is titled appropriately, January. What an adventure is about to begin as Cal is told someone wants him dead and all he has to do is survive for the next 365 days and it will all be over. Cal doesn't even get a chance to wonder about what this all means as he faces his first trial and almost gets eaten by a shark. So, a mystery to solve, someone out to get rid of you, and being told to go into hiding for a year. This could be one exciting year of reading! The Iowa Center for the Book established All Iowa Reads in 2003. This was an initiative to get communities across the state to join together to read a chosen book and hold book discussions. Well, for the first time, All Iowa Reads has added a children's book and a Young Adult book to the reading list. For the year 2018, All Iowa Reads has chosen the adult book, The Boys in the Bunkhouse by Dan Barry; the children's book, Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and the YA book, Girl in the Blue Coat by Monica Hesse.
Girl in the Blue Coat, the Young Adult choice, is historical fiction. It is set in the time of World War II. For the protagonist in this story, it was a time of danger, and quiet rebellion as she sells black market items to those around her. It's dangerous, but it takes care of her family. But, her world is going to get even more dangerous as a customer pulls her into her confidence and asks her to help find a missing Jewish teenager who was hiding in her customer's house. In our culture of refugees and unrest, we may be able to put ourselves into the story of a young person who makes a choice to face the danger and value life. This book could be the beginning of lots of good discussion. |
