Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is one of a series of books. Our protagonist, Alina, grew up as an orphan. When she was very young, she was tested for the ability to use the small sciences, but she fooled them all. It was not until life and death presented itself that her powers manifested themselves and her life was changed forever. Now, she is tasked with saving the world for the people she loves.
The next book I want to mention also has a female protagonist. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson is also a series. Elisa is a princess, she is also the chosen one. She has never been beautiful and does not see herself as useful, but she is betrothed and on her sixteenth birthday becomes the secret wife to a handsome king. It is hoped that the alliance, and her gift, will be enough to save the kingdom. She has to make some tough choices about love and loyalty as she grows to be an amazing queen.
The Dark City by Catherine Fisher is the first book in the Relic Master series. Galen and his sixteen year old apprentice, Raffi are in search of a relic that may be the key to saving their crumbling world. The question is whether or not they can find it in time to do any good and without leading their enemies right to it.
Two other books that fit into the fantasy genre and have been popular among readers include: Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor and The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. Both books are a part of a series. Daughter of Smoke & Bone is set in a modern world with winged creatures that have come through a slit in the sky. The Iron King draws our characters into the land of faeries.
So, if you are like me and don't read a lot of fantasy, maybe one of these books will give you a place to start.
