Dumplin' by Julie Murphy is entertaining and thought provoking. It addresses how we see ourselves and how we find value in accepting our faults. This is a light, entertaining book, but with lots of substance. What does a girl do when she is overweight and her mother is in charge of the annual beauty pageant. Her mother places so much value on everything being perfect and fitting the image of what is acceptable, that our protagonist has a hard time believing that she can ever deserve to have the things associated with being thin, like a boyfriend. In a moment of rebellion, she decides to enter the pageant. This affects so many more people than just herself and her mother, and everyone learns and grows because of it.
I added this book to my To-Be-Read list a long time ago and then forgot all about it. So, when I was browsing the shelves recently for something to read that would be quick and light, I picked it up.
