So, today I'm highlighting a new book on our shelves that teaches survival skills. How to Start a Fire with Water by David Arama. Looking back on the experience, maybe I should have read the book before I went. The fire that we struggled to start did not get hot enough to roast our marshmallows. So, maybe we failed that part of the training. Anyway, this book offers information not only for wilderness survival, but also home, work, travel, and disaster training. So, whatever the situation, you can find lots of good advice in this book.
Our teens had some fun last week when we headed out to the local park and learned some survival skills from our local naturalist. She took us into the woods and had us building shelters and learning how to read a compass. After we talked about the compass, she led us further into the woods and left us to find our own way back. There really wasn't much chance that we were going to get lost, but I thought that I would see the way back on the top of the first hill I climbed; and I didn't.
