The first is Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy. This book is based on the true story of a young girl in the Middle East who was born with a cleft pallet. In her culture, this made her life less valuable because she would not be able to attract a wealthy husband. But, there were people who crossed her path and offered her a new outlook on life. This is a story about how good people can make a difference.
Another story about changed lives is A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This book is also based on a true story. It is a story of struggle as it follows the story of two lives and how a young man who escaped the African desert was able to go back and see his choices directly affect the lives of his fellow Africans.
Guantanamo Boy by Anna Perera creates the scenario of what could happen if you are believed to be a terrorist and you are hauled away to Guantanamo. Are you innocent until proven guilty? Are you questioned and released? What about torture? What about your family? Guantanamo Boy gives one set of answers to the questions.
Again, I hope you find something that you can enjoy reading this week.
