Scythe by Neal Shusterman has been gaining lots of attention. This book creates a world where there is no war, no hunger, no disease, and no misery. It sounds like a perfect world. But, even in a perfect world, there is death, not by natural causes, but at the hands of the scythe. The scythe are the only ones who can end a life and it is their duty, otherwise the population will grow out of control. So, who is chosen to act as scythe? Is it an honor, or something to dread? How are the ones that are to be gleaned chosen? What makes one life more valuable than another? These are questions that the book Scythe may answer.
For the reader who loves a good mystery, you might try Need by Joelle Charbonneau. Everyone is checking out a new social media sight that grants needs. It asks just one question, 'What do you need?' So, when Kaylee asks for a new kidney for her brother, she has no idea what she is getting herself into. The site grants needs, but it also makes demands in exchange. Kaylee sets out to find out who is behind the site before the consequences of expressing a need destroys anyone else.
Finally, from one of my favorite authors, Heartless by Marissa Meyer. Set in Wonderland, this is a story of kings and queens, mothers wanting their daughters to be queens, daughters wanting to follow their heart, and magic. As with every good fairy tale, there are balls and proposals, and lots of surprises. I think the reader will enjoy the hints at the original Wonderland as they read Heartless.
