Janet Edwards is the author of Earth Girl, Earth Star, and Earth Flight. This is a trilogy that follows the life of Jarra. Humanity has learned how to portal off of Earth to other planets and the solar system has been colonized. Unfortunately, there are some whose immune system rejects the ability to portal to other systems and if they try, they will die within minutes of their arrival. Jarra is one of these individuals who is 'stuck' on earth. Over the years, those who are unable to portal have been relegated to handicapped status and are seen as less than human. Jarra will not accept this status and sets out to prove to 'normals' that she has just as much worth as they do.
Through the course of the three books, Jarra has caused a revolution. There is lots of cultural and social tension as well as political intervention. For an educator looking for an interesting way to address the political process involved in effecting change, these books would prove useful. It even made me think about our electoral college and three branches of government. These books could also make great essay writing material. Very good reading.
