A favorite of several of my girls has been The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. The Goose Girl is set in a time of royalty and arranged marriages as a young princess learns about herself and grows into her position.
A book for the whole family, Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt is historical fiction. It follows the life of Jethro Creighton during the civil war. Our history not only had a divided nation, but many times, divided families. This is a story of political unrest, courage, and hope.
If you like to be challenged to think, you might enjoy The Compound by S.A. Bodeen. This is a story of a family that has retreated underground when a nuclear holocaust has destroyed the world. They have been living underground for six years. Is it safe to return to the surface, and what will they find when they get there? This book is truly a thriller.
A couple more suggestions for light entertainment include Heist Society by Ally Carter and A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn. Heist Society has a thief with a conscience. A Kiss in Time is a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Both are fun listening material.
Have a great holiday, and happy traveling!
